Each planet has a role to play in your personality according to astrologers. They represent our urges and emotional makeup. There are 10 celestial bodies often referred to as planets in astrology circles. In this article, you’ll learn what the planets represent in your chart.

Personal Planets

Personal planets define our individuality. This is how we are regardless of what is going on externally.

Sun – This represents our ego and how we express it. This is how we are similar to others born in the same zodiac season. It is the main part of our personality since it is the biggest celestial body. The role of the sun in your chart is where you naturally shine. Your attention and identity often revolve around the house it is in.

Moon – While this is not classified as a planet in astronomy, those in astrology refer to it as a planet since it is the second most significant influence in your chart. This is your co-star, the supporting character in your story. It shows how you are different than those born with your sun sign. This represents your emotional makeup and needs. Some would say the sun is who you are when you are sober, and the moon is who you are when you are drunk. It’s more of a backseat driver until your emotions bubble up.

Mercury – This planet shows us how we process the world. It’s our style of learning and communication. When this planet is harmoniously aspected people find it easy to talk in any situation. Whereas, if it were hard aspected, these people may come off differently than how they feel. Either too much or too little gets expressed.

Venus – This planet represents our values and natural charm, it’s how we love and get love. It could represent beauty, and how and where we express this beauty. When others make an aspect to our Venus they will naturally be drawn to and seduced by our kind of beauty.

Mars – This planet represents our drives both physical and emotional, though in a more competitive environment. Mars is a war planet, so if it is highly aspected a person can be aggressive or temperamental. The more aspects it makes, the more easily the person gets triggered into action. If this is channeled correctly then the result would be more athletic gifts and a greater will to win.

Outer Planets

These planets influence the events that were happening around us when we were born. Because they are slower moving these planets shape our personality due to external factors.

Jupiter – This planet is all about growth and expansion. It is where things are set in motion and we just ride the wave. It is where we are shown generosity and show generosity. Remember he beat Cronos. This should remind you that wisdom, and joy usually conquers paranoia and misery.

Saturn – This planet represents our structure and discipline. It’s about conquering ourselves and toughening it out. Where Mars is a soldier, Saturn is a general. Mars could be stronger, but Saturn is more structured. Strength without direction is wasted talent. Saturn makes the rules and provides direction through restrictions and getting rid of things that impede progress. When Saturn makes aspects to other planets, the other planets get controlled and are forced to organize, get serious, and follow the rules. Saturn is represented by the Titan Cronos who conquered Ouranos the father of creation and chaos.

Uranus – This is the planet of sudden changes and creation. Where this planet transit is where the upheavals and changes occur that will force us to invent and reinvent. This planet brings with it changes without our consideration. It’s a planet of wanting freedom through rebellion or not following the status quo. The house it is in is often forced to grow and pivot oftentimes with no warning. Uranus in your chart is where you appear unpredictable and chaotic at times and so attract upheavals or constant change in that house. Sometimes you got to throw what you know out the door. But Neptune represents otherworldly planes both internally and externally. Neptune represents our “imagination”, visualizations, trance, and psychic impulses. If you work with manifestation you have to trust the visualization is real to even attempt to make it happen. Neptune, if not fully understood, is where we daydream. But if fully understood, it is where our magic lies. Neptune is represented by the Titan Poseidon he governs the various realms separating realities, from sea to land, to space, and beyond.

Pluto – Once demoted, now promoted. This planet is all about power dynamics. It represents our personal power and our ease or struggles to evolve and transform. This is where our crazy hides.
